Centre for Transnational Mennonite Studies (CTMS) builds on 37 years of Mennonite Studies at the University of Winnipeg. It continues in the spirit of the original endowment established in 1978 to study Mennonites within a public university. CTMS arises from recent developments in Mennonite Studies (shaped by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada, grants and generous community-funds) highlighting the transnational nature of Mennonite society, a global one extending beyond Canada. At the foundation of CTMS are two existing programs: the Chair in Mennonite Studies (since 1978) and the community-based D.F. Plett Historical Research Foundation Inc. (located at the U of W since 2005). CTMS anticipates future collaborative effort with various departments at the University of Winnipeg, as well as with community-based societies. Its goal is to advance the teaching of Mennonite Studies, the research and knowledge mobilization of Mennonite society, and outreach within the wider public and Mennonite society.
